Welcome to a new academic school year in the EEP. Wow, time and the year flies by, and we find ourselves backing September and the fall quarter This is an exciting and fast paced time for us so don't expect slow downs now. Fall is a time where we welcome a new freshman cohort, welcome back to school all returning Regular EEPsters and extend congratulations to Regulars who have been advanced to EEP Elder status so we will say goodbye to 2008 graduates :-) Though the fall newsletter is typically the lightest content wise due to the time constraints and extra work brought on by the very busy EEP summertime so we will bring you most everything you need to know about the EEP effective September 2007. Adjust your peepers and start your reading engines.
Go!
-----------------
Last Quarter's EventS
-----------------
On June 20th the EEP applicants, Provisional EEPsters, or Provies made their appearance on campus for the assessment Provie summer. We welcomed and then began the assessments.
On June 22nd, 29th, and July 13th, the 2007 EEP Provies attended the traditional Friday Orientations in KH Lecture Hall I. The orientations include a library tour with Dr. Alan Stein, a study skills seminar from Dr. Howard Masuda, and discussions of Provie related items with the Director and Mentor Teams. On their final Friday orientation, Provies ate pizza, drank soda pop and had the traditional Provie's summer water balloon fight to end the 07 Provie Orientation series on a relaxed and fun note.
July 11th was the EEPC Transition Meeting, where much transitioning and more pizza eating took place. This is the annual EEPC lunch meeting where old greets new EEP Club Officers. We discovered that there was much institutional knowledge lost in transition prior to these meetings. As always, the EEPC is here to serve your needs. We welcome a new Board (the new officers were announced in last term's Newsletter and are re-announced in the President's message at the end of this Newsletter) EEPC officers are indeed now fully transitioned for our convenience.
Bowling Night took place at the Alhambra Bowling Center on Friday August 3rd. This was the only off-campus event open to both EEP Regulars and Provies. Bowling Night has become a full-fledged EEP tradition and the only EEPC off campus event that the Provies participate in during the summer. Many EEPsters enjoyed a nice evening of merriment among the great unwashed. We came, we saw, we bowled
On August 7th, our student counselor Lisa (Sakamoto) and her husband Scott proudly announced the birth of their first child a baby girl named Ella Leigh Sakamoto. Congratulations to the now larger Sakamoto family!
On August 8th and 15th, Mentor groups presented their Provie Mentor group projects, group projects are designed to build team work, provide for a shared experience and to allow for Provies to best adjust to the admission decisions made coincidentally during the time period for Mentor Provie group project completion. A judging panel of Head Mentors Amanda Jancu and Swapneel Patel and Director Maddox enjoyed many laughs and good cheer associated with the fun and well crafted projects presented by the Mentors and Provies, projects included an EEP Board Game, three videos, two posters and one play all focused on the shard EEP summer experience.
We are happy to announce the winners of the Mentor–Provie Group Project and Presentation Contest with our 1st place winner were team Midvale School for the Gifted (MSG). Their project was a very innovative and creative EEP Board Game, complete with hand-made penguin game pieces and quiz cards about the Provie process. Congratulations to the very involved and artistic Sharon R, Constance J, Sanmit N and their Provies!!!!!
On August 13-15th , 20-22nd , and 27-29th, the office sponsored Small Group Meetings for Provies who were Advanced to Candidacy were held. These meetings, designed for expected incoming freshmen and their parents, are an annual rite. Small Group meetings allow for new freshmen and their parents to learn about their new lives as EEPsters and PEEPsters. It is a crash course in policy and procedure as well as exposure to EEP life (certainly not to be confused with Thug life!!).Again, Welcome New members of the EEP family!
On August 23rd, EEP alum Daniel Rollins and wife Mariah Rollins (sister of EEPsters Bryce, Jason and Sharon) had their second baby, Laura Jean Benson. The EEP family grows even outside the confines of CSLA! It is a fast growing EEP world indeed!
Our Annual Catalina Island Camping Trip took place from Thursday September 6th to Sunday September 9th. This trip is designed to be a bonding experience among all EEPsters and their new freshmen brothers and sisters. As usual, all 84 campers enjoyed a full weekend of fun in the sun including kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, and, most importantly, a break from mom and dad! ? Thanks to all the counselors!

EEP Academic Counselor Monica Marquez-Savala will be holding all individual meetings with each EEPster this quarter beginning Week #2 while Lisa is away on maternity leave; though her role will be different than Lisa's as Lisa focus is the emotional and psychological health of our status Monica's focus is general help, guidance and academic advisement. Students may find their meeting time in the individual meeting schedule (included herein and e-mailed home earlier. Special announcement note regarding the EEPC website mentioned above. We are planning to create an EEPC forum for Exclusively for New Freshman so they may interact with Elders in order to share info/ perspectives/advice and in order to help the freshmen adap to the EEP while allowing Elders the chance to see the EEP through the perspective of a new students and to gain valuable helping/counseling experience In brief, to promote harmony and to develop a positive culture the EEPC proposed a system whereby the eldest & most experienced EEPsters (i.e. Elders) may interact with the newest, least experienced students (i.e. Freshmen), the office agrees this is an excellent idea and pledged to help The Club develop and maintain this new Elder-Frosh Forum of Learning and Development (E-FOLD). More info on this new Program soon (group meetings etc.). In the meantime, please go to http://www.epclub.org to register and to get involved in the dialogue that is currently available.

We proudly announce yet another campus Club created by an EEPster and designed to help the community called People for Animal Care and Kindness or PACK. The officers of PACK are Millie G as President, Amy W is VP, David S is Treasurer, Raj S is Secretary, Nika N is Public Relations chair, Shanshan L is events organizer, and Constance J is the self-proclaimed unofficial tech chair. PACK has recently contacted an organization called Animal Defense League - Los Angeles and met with a representative who is a member of their board, and they're willing to completely support PACK – giving PACK info about any petitions they have on-going , providing PACK with speakers, films, and flyers. There is a lot they want to do next year such as guest speakers and showing documentaries with different themes, (Fall quarter we will be focusing on encouraging people to adopt dogs/cats rather than buying from breeders). They are all really excited about making a difference in the Cal State LA community! To get in the PACK contact Millie G.

NEWS & NOTICES from the Program Director
Hi all and welcome to the Fall2007! Because this is the quarter break that includes Catalina and my yearly summer vacation week I will write fast and make it brief. Only four bullet points in this quarter's Message. I am rather late in getting this Newsletter to you my apologies!
1. We have finalized the new EEP Citation system that I have written about (past newsletters, -mailings etc.) and that I have discussed with the EEPsters at length (ad naseum?!). The citation system is merely a formalized procedure to control behavior and provide a safe and appropriate atmosphere for the students. After much work, we have created a form (included herein) that students may use to identify problem behaviors in the lounge and other campus areas. The citation system/form is not meant to replace other lines of communication between students and staff it really is just another method to allow students to report problems to responsible parties. It has always been our preference to have students police themselves to avoid the main Big Three problems of:
• Wasted resources/ destruction of equipment and property
• Bad housekeeping practices
• Roughhousing/horseplay /hurtful or mean-spirited actions and or intentions
Unfortunately, the students have not been able to properly achieve the goal of self-policing in order to control these Big Three problem areas and behavior control so student safety and Program property continue to be at some risk. In order to promote proper and responsible behavior, control waste and limit the probability of risky behaviors that the ability of students to document poor behavior for corrective action to be taken should result in increased student safety.Begining this term we will introduce a new system to allow students to Cite those who cause problems for everyone. I have attached as an addendum a copy of the actual citation form to be distributed to all EEPsters (group meetings) for their use in documenting/ identifying those who break rules and cause problems. Certainly, students may continue to police themselves, report problems to staff in-person, use e-mail or the phone. In the meantime, we will now also have this paper Citation that students may complete and submit to any staff member or EEP officer or in the new Suggestion box (coming soon to the Living Room of the Lounge.
Also, to help us best support students and improve the Program there will be other new documents for staff use called the Incident form and a Counseling Session form. The Incident form will be used to document incidents involving student behavior both of the positive and negative nature (more likely negative, realistically speaking). The forms will allow us to document and create solutions for problems while also recognizing acts of goodness and altruism (hopefully). The form(s) should provide an effective method to shape behavior and improve healthy development of the adolescent citizen/scholar. The Counseling session form will simple be a method of documenting meetings/advisement sessions that we hold with students and it will formalize what has formerly been the yellow legal pad procedure (i.e. scribbled notes on a legal pad) the pad procedure will be replaced with a form (i.e. Counseling session form) that will standardize and better structure the frequent formal advisement/ counseling sessions and interactions we have with our students. There is a space for improvement, objectives and action plans on the form(s) so solutions and progress towards solutions may be identified and recorded. Incident reports and Counseling Session forms may help address the following areas of concern:
1. Student behavior problems
2. Student scholarship performance deficiencies
3. Student policy university/program) transgressions
4. Student complaints
5. Minimized Documentation/follow-up of student performance, progress and improvement plans.
Incident forms will be used in conjunction to the citation form noted earlier. Staff members will complete Incident forms to document certain incidents of note while students will use/complete Citation forms in order to report and document inappropriate lounge behavior to staff.
2. Speaking of the EEP Lounge, the EEP will indeed be moving its lounge space in the near future. While we do not yet know officially where we will be moving we are told it will be larger and improved including a bigger and more appropriate study space. The Art department and Academic Affairs Division initiated this move in order to accommodate a new masters program in fine arts; the Art dept needs the present EEP space to house this new grad program and so we must find a new campus home. We have been very busy working on a proposal for space in conjunction with the PEEP and our Division representatives in the Student Affairs VP office. Moving the EEP is not easy so we will count on your help and patience. Imagine moving a family of 160 from an 1100 sq foot house!
3 Speaking of Student Affairs Division. Effective September 24th the EEP will be moving its reporting lines within the university (i.e. who the EEP reports to organizationally) from Student Affairs to Academic Affairs. The EEP was created as an Academic Affairs Program originally in 1982-1985 and so will now return to our proverbial roots. We hope this system change will result in greater support and funding though I do not know how it will actually turn out. It is possible that the change will be totally transparent to the students and parents though some changes may occur especially in terms of academic policy enforcement so please as always, follow the rules take the proper classes and heed Program advisement.
4. We have noticed that some older EEPsters (usually Elders) have taken to showing up unexpectedly to Program related Field Trips and this practice is putting at risk future field trips. While we certainly cannot prohibit the travels of Elders during non-school hours we ask that if any student is or was in attendance at the university through the Program (i.e. EEPsters) officially compete all requirements for Field Trips (i.e. sign up prior to the trip, submit needed paperwork, act appropriately, and be in good standing. When students show up unannounced/un-accounted for to trip locations, they present liability problems and this must be controlled. Please preserve Field trips and follow the simple trip procedures/instructions (see above requirements) for program related field trips
All these topics and more can/ may be discussed at Parent meetings including the WPC biannual PEEP meetings and at the annual Fall welcome meeting in early October.

Cheers To students who take the initiative to create campus clubs involving community service and volunteerism
Cheers To parent supporters who continue to help us in multiple and myriad ways not excluding, certainly, the fund raising efforts each year that allow us to continue serving the students
Cheers to those in Student Affairs who have helped us since 2001
Cheers to the office staff who work tirelessly to best support Program students parents and each other.
Jeers to students who are mean-spirited or act inappropriately, making others uncomfortable.
Jeers To those who don't use common sense in daily practice as this makes life and communication not particularily easy nor pleasant
Jeers To those few students whose poor behavior necessitates the creating for formalized processes to correct bad behavior ( forms and documentation procedures noted earlier)
Should any parent want to discuss their child's performance or if there are any questions or concerns please call the office to schedule a meeting. You may also feel free to call or e-mail Rich or Randi. Have a great quarter!

President's Message
Hello, hello, hello, oh grand universe of EEP. This is President Cory “Frosty” O'Brien bidding you an inaugural “good day” at the dawn of my administration. This year promises to be a fantastic one for EEP Club, and – by extension – the general EEP population. We've got lofty goals, and the means to achieve them.
I'd be remiss if I failed to mention, thank, and pour compliments upon outgoing president Pam Lee. Thanks to her (and her outstanding board.) EEP Club is now stronger than ever, with an ample budget surplus for perhaps the first time ever. Let me assure all of those Pam Lee loyalists out there that I will not do away with many of the fine events and traditions she introduced over the past year.
That said, EEP club remained dormant this past summer, providing only one spectacular event for all the lovely students of EEP. Bowling night was a rousing success, attracting a wide array of both regular EEP Students and Advanced Provisionals. (I know you're all technically freshmen now. Don't hate me.) Pizza was eaten, soda was imbibed, and balls were hurled. Mountains of thanks to Lea Urpa and Jennifer Chen for making sure everything ran as smoothly as possible.
Speaking of Lea Urpa and Jennifer Chen, these two fine ladies are not the only administrative soldiers marching under the EEP Club banner. What follows is a complete list of this year's EEP Club officers (Including Lea and Jen) and their positions. Feel free to hug them, thank them, ask them for help, or give them money whenever you see them.
Jake P – Handsome Vice President
Margaret L – Secretary
David S – Treasurer
Lea U – Social Chair
Jennifer C – Student Life Assistant
Angela C – Yearbook Chair
Maggie H – P.R. Chair
Chris “Rick” “Waffles” K – Journalism Chair
Eugene S – Freshman Class President
James L – Sophomore Class President
Brian M – Sergeant at Arms
Alex S – Soda Machine Master General
Julian B – Technology Chair
These fine people are representatives of your interests as students. Of course, you are your own best representative, so you're always welcome to attend our weekly meetings –Mondays at 9:00am – to make your concerns known. As for these officers, one of their many jobs is to answer whatever questions you may have about EEP Club, EEP Life, or any other concept with an EEP in front of it. Your job is to ask those questions. So ask away, EEPland, and we'll try our best to have the answers.
