Last Quarter’s EventS
-----------------
The winter began on January 2nd with the triumphant return of Program Director Rich Maddox from his medical leave into the open and anxious, if not, metaphorical, arms of over 40 new Provies and their parents who were coming in to see him for their initial EEP interview.
Shortly thereafter, the EEPClub / EEP office and students of the EEP threw a fantastic Welcome Back party for Rich in the EEP kitchen/dining hall. The feast included Subway sandwiches, chips soda and tasty-delicious cake! Rich seemed overwhelmed and told everyone later at group meetings that he couldn’t stay long as he felt so emotional that he feared a crying spell in front of all of his young charges so he reclused himself, food in hand to the office suite, while the student body ate drank and made merriment as they rejoiced the Director's return to his and their campus home! All hail life, and a return to work and health!
January 5th Friday was a very memorable EEP Marriage Day when alum Bryce Ready'03 (BYU grad school computer science) wed his non-EEP but very lovely fiancée Camilla Charene at the Mount Tempanogos Utah Temple of Latter-Day Saints. Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Ready!!
The EEPC held their traditional Laser tag field trip on Friday evening, January 26th, 2007. The Club bustled off a pack of 23 EEPster Taggers (as they were) to the Alhambra Laser tag palace where many lasers were used in some type of contest or a game of tag. That's about all we know aside from reports of much fun being had by many EEPsters at this EEPC favorite affair!
February 8th saw the first ever EEP–related film premier when EEP alum, commercial actor and director GJ Echternkamp’96 first full length feature film, "Frank and Cindy, a documentary" premiered at the Fine Arts Theater on Wilshire in Beverly Hills 9:00pm to midnight. We heard shortly thereafter that it was a huge success and GJ hopes that a cable distribution deal is in the works, perhaps through Showtime. We will alert everyone through e-mail when it is picked-up for general television viewing. Congratulations GJ!!
More Late Breaking News sent in e-mail on 3-22-07 about GJ’s film. This American Life (!) will be airing an entire TV episode about GJ and the film: April 12th, at 10:30pm on Showtime with repeats throughout the week. Go here for info: www.sho.com/site/thisamericanlife/home.do , www.thislife.org ...this is an entirely new cut with a different focus than the feature length version, so it should be worth seeing even if you've already seen the film. Also, the film will be playing in the New York Underground Film Festival: Sunday, April 1st, at 7:00pm at the Anthology Film Archives, on 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street. For more and tickets info go to: www.nyuff.com/2006/
The EEP welcomed a different filmmaker Mr. Daniel Snyder from Mercury Productions to the EEP throughout the Winter term as he worked on Prodigy, documentary of gifted youth and their families. In addition to interviewing the Program Director on Wednesday February 8th Mr. Snyder, whose film project was first announced through mass EEP e-mail, also interviewed a number of EEPsters both in and out of class through February 14th. We heard that as he finishes editing and shops the film to various outlets that he hopes a PBS related station would air the special soon.
The EEPC sponsored Winter field trip on Friday February 23rd to the Aquarium of the Pacific was a great learning-fun experience for a hearty band of EEPsters led by President Pam Lee, with the Program Director in tow the mighty group of 9 all traveled on two light rail/subway trains and two buses to complete the round trip to the Aquarium in Long Beach The grouped dined at Chilis and witnessed much sea and human life on their fun day at the Aquarium. It was a blast and we encourage more EEPsters to get involved in such wonderful academic and social events especially those that use public transit as it's easy, cheap and a good experience for young Angelinos to get to know their city.
These events are good for the body, good for the brain and good for the spirit!
Jostens Rings EEP representative Cheryl arrived to meet EEPsters interested in Class Rings on February 20th 2007 in the EEP Lounge Game room. Please be on the lookout for future Jostens visits coming up soon in Group Meetings and certainly through e-mail messages
On Monday March 19th, the EEPC held its 4th Annual Spring Social otherwise known as the EEP Anti-Prom; a Prom like event held by and for EEPsters this year at the PEEP owned restaurant and Bistro Firefly in South Pasadena from 6:00pm to 11:00pm . Dancing, dining and socializing EEP Style was the fare and we hear a dance contest was held and won by a wonderful swing dance performance by Pam Lee and Frosty O Brien (wait for the Yearbook DVD for this performance!) who took home the $50.00 cash prize. On behalf of the EEPC we thank the board especially Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien (PEEPsters), Randi our academic GA and Prom chaperone, Nika Nourmohammadi Student Life Assistant, Laura Petersen Social Chair, and the rest of the board such as the Laudable Lee Sisters, Margaret and Pam who all worked very diligently to make the EEP Prom, a HUGE success with well over 40 students in attendance. Go non-traditional Pro! EEP Style!
Thursday March 22nd the EEP driven HOC (Humanitarians on campus) led their club on a Beach Clean up trip to Santa Monica . Much debris was collected and this beautiful beach was left more beautiful by these outstanding EEPster Humanitarians. Bravo!
On Sunday, March 25th the EEPC board members James Lee, Margaret Lee, and Pam Lee, FrostyOBrien, Laura Petersen , Elizabeth Chamberlin, Stephanie Sung and the Director came into the Lounge for some good ole-fashioned EEP Spring cleaning and organizing in preparation for the cleaning done by actual janitorial/cleaning service team hired by the PEEEP that visits to the Lounge on the Friday after Finals week to scrub/wax the floors and everything else as well! Check out the bookcase in the EEP library as it is now organized and sorted for easy student use reference.

AnnouncementS
-----------------
We made three Big Announcements at Group Meetings Week #8 which are: 1. Lisa our faithful and talented Student Counselor and her husband proudly announced Lisa’s pregnancy! The happy and future new parents look forward to a summer-time birth of their child so please join us in a huge EEP congratulation. We look forward to Baby Sakamoto joining us in the EEP one day, when-if needed.
2. Our equally fantastic EEP Office Assistant Amanda Jancu notified us that she would be winding down her time as our EEP office SA as she prepares to graduate, apply to Law School for next year. Taking Amanda’s place will be EEP Elder Sharon Ready. Sharon and her family have a very long detailed history with the EEP (two brothers came through the Program and the eldest sibling was mentioned earlier in this Newsletter) and Sharon is the last (at least the last from PEEPsters Mel and Laura!) Both outstanding EEPsters Amanda and Sharon will work together 10 hours per week in the EEP office through summer as Amanda trains Sharon, the full transition will happen sometime next academic year.
3. Randi Swedenberg our dedicated Academic Counselor will also be leaving us soon as she too will graduate and need to move on to a full time position. We wish we had the funding and fulltime staff position available to give, as we would absolutely love to retain Randi for the kids, Sadly, though, we do not have such funding and so we will begin to look for her replacement Grad Assistant (GA) in spring of 07. Continue to send Tutoring requests to Randi or the EEP Academic Chair Samantha Hsu by mailing a note to: sammy_ hsu @sbcglobal.net
The Spring WPC exam is right around the corner and, as always, we need parent and student support/assistance for this biannual EEP event which is scheduled for: Sunday, April 15th .As a reminder and for your info please note the following test-related info:
All parent refreshment donations for either the student break room or for the Tester parent reception are warmly welcomed in the morning hours on the test date and may be dropped off at King Hall with EEP students
07-08 EEPC Elections: EEP Club elections will be held during group meetings this Spring07quarter, so be on the lookout for sign up sheets during week for candidate slates, President and Vice President. The 2007-2008 President & Vice President will be determined through an all-EEP election, while the new executive team will appoint the rest of the board. Stay tuned for more information or email if you are interested!eepclub1@gmail.com. We need STRONG student leaders to run or office
EEPClub Website: Worried about missing crucial EEPClub information? Go to www.eepclub.org and create an account today! Almost all forms, permission slips and event info will be available only through this website but you must register (it is so easy even non-EEPster could do it!) Make sure you include your first name in your username (e.g. Margaret1 if you are Margaret Lee) to be approved ASAP. The website contains news on events, photos, newsletters, officer profiles, and is constantly updated with new information.
EEP Yearbook is being produced but we may still need your individual photo taken contact Margaret Lee to arrange a shoot time else Rich threatened to draw a picture of those who did not have a real photo taken with his still recovering left hand so its bound to look like a Charlie Brown letter! Because of overcrowding in the EEP common areas and for overall Program safety the EEP Guest policy was established many years ago and was recently discussed at Group Meetings this quarter. A copy of the policy was subsequently also mailed home to every parent. We discovered several EEPsters were violating the policy and so we saw the need to reiterate the main points of the policy with the EEPsters at Group Meetings. These points include the 1. need for parent permission for all guests in the lounge 2. supervision of all guests by the EEP student host/hostess, 3. 24-hour prior notification of visits and 4. introduction of all guests to EEP staff upon entry to the lounge areas.
When we mailed home the guest policy notice we took the opportunity in the same mailing to inform every one of an issue and a request for help regarding an e-mail communications problem. We have discovered that, although we use e-mail as the primary method of communicating to all members of the EEP family (Regulars, Freshman class,Elders and PEEPsters), that we still do not have a complete working list of good/working e-mail addresses and so then many notices and much news is, unfortunately, not received by all in the EEP community. We asked in the letter refenced above for everyone in EEP to reflect on the number of e-mails received from us (i.e. from "EEP Staff, rmaddox and the EEP Club" addresses) in the last quarter. If you did not get at least one e-mail from us recently then, chances are, we do not have your e-mail address and therefore you are missing important news, opportunities and policy changes. We never release student or parent information nor do we send SPAM so there is no need to fear releasing your actual e-mail address. We do send info and news on campus and program events/ activities/ alerts, announcements, fun stuff and lots, lots more!! For instance, did you know Harvard and MIT are posting lectures from their prestigious faculty on-line for anyone to hear and learn? We did and we sent the link to everyone in EEP J So please do not miss out! Please send us an e-mail with your correct, working up-to-date address ASAP or call us, now before you forget!
Speaking of forgetting. Many students had registration delays due to a failure to submit new updated health center forms to the EEP office. These new forms that were mandated by the University Health Center were first announced in the Newsletter in Fall of 2005 the forms were discussed at Group Meetings then several (6) e-mail notices were sent to all EEP groups asking for the new forms to be submitted to the EEP office immediately. Finally, after three deadlines had passed over a period of more than 6 months we were forced to place registration holds on all students who were excessively out of compliance. From speaking to students and parents during the time these holds were impacting we discovered that both our e-mail reminders and group meeting discussions were not attended to or not received at all and so the forms were a surprise!
We take this opportunity to announce (again) that e-mail is the primary method of communicating for the Program and that, in a short time, the university proper will also move toward using e-mail as the primary /only mode of communication with students (i.e.the Hobsons Program for colleges & universities) and so the risk of error/problems for all students increase greatly if these university e-mails are not attended to in a timely manner. Many other universities already have made this change so EEPsters who are headed to grad school this year should be prepared to attend to electronic communication through their EEP experience with e-mail. We are ahead of the curve again by changing to e-mail many months ago so EEP members should be quite accustomed to this new e-mail only school reality when is comes about at CSLA very soon
We discovered after Finals that the students left their cubby area in a truly unbelievable mess even more so than ever before. We took pictures of the disaster available for your review and, possibly shame, on the EEP Club www.eepclub.org/?Page=home and EEF websites earlyentrancefoundation.org/peep/mess.html As known and widely posted EEP policy, every student must clean out their cubby and the cubby area of all personal property at the end of every quarter, usually by the Friday of Finals Week. While the EEP, unfortunately, has a long history of student non-compliance in terms of cleaning up after themselves throughout the quarter as well as leaving much too much in their cubby locker area, this break period we discovered the level of discarded personal property was wildly excessive even for our historically messy teens. Piles of clothing including jackets, hats, and shoes were left scattered throughout the cubby space .In addition, even though EEP/school policy clearly states that all personally assigned lockers and storage spaces provided must be cleaned out completely at the end of each term and all items left will be discarded, the majority of EEP cubbies still had many belongings as of Monday after Finals Week or March 19th that included cookware, Tupperware, old food, flatware, ice chests, books, papers, calculators, envelopes with cash meant, I pods, and every manner of writing utensil were found left abandoned. Although students certainly have the right to throw away/discard their property they should do so in proper waste receptacles (i.e. trash cans) plus we don't think the parents who paid for these items may be as supportive of this freedom to waste as student! In terms of respect for the EEP and staff members, leaving this mess for us to clean, is inappropriate and shows very little care sentiment for our time. In order to ensure students never again leave the cubby area in such a disastrous condition effective at the end of the Spring quarter we will require all cubbies/cubby area to be cleaned out by Thursday morning of Finals week with a noontime deadline. In addition, effective Friday March 30th all items left on the floor every Friday morning will be immediately discarded. No personal property should be left in the cubby or any other area of the Lounge over the weekend. We have received university violation citations for the condiotion of the student lounge and these violations will negatively affect our chances of getting additional campus space As per current policy any and all property left in the lounge without proper permission after the deadline noted above will be immediately discarded or otherwise donated to the EEPC or other off campus charity. Please make a note of this policy change which will also be discussed at group meetings in spring
Documentary filmmaker Mr. Daniel Snyder has finished his visit to the EEP and completed principal photography. He is now in the process of finding a venue for the film project entitled Prodigy (i.e. e-mails were distributed with details about this project many weeks ago). We will announce all future info regarding the airing of his film when available.
The EEPClub website is currently undergoing a transformation in order to be more user-friendly and to be of more use to the EEP population and parents Soon all event forms, permission slips, order forms etc will be available only on-line so check out re student newsletter and everything else plus register top use the site: www.eepclub.org/?Page=home
The EEP Yearbook sales are officially over so we hope everyone got their order in as costs are greatly inflated when we are forced to order additional copies after the first "pressing" There is still time to order a personal page and you may film a segment for the Yearbook DVD so contact EEP club Yearbook Editor Margaret Lee margaretlee.23@gmail.com for more details please also check the Group Meeting binder (red in color in the living room by the blackboard) for more Yearbook info
The Mock Trial Club, for those interested in careers in law, competed in the regional competition at Claremont McKenna College (CMC) from February 23-25th. If you are interested in learning more information about Mock Trial, or if you want to join the team for next year, feel free to e-mail the President of the club, David Nagy, at tealterror@sbcglobal.net or attend Sprig meetings TBA See the Lounge postings/Big Board for the location of this term’s meetings or e-mail David; the advisor for the Club is EEP alum and lawyer Mark Gordon, J.D
Academic Counselor Randi Swedenberg will continue meeting with each EEP student beginning Week #2 of Winter quarter. Students must sign up for a meeting time on the Meeting Clipboard in the EEP Lounge and can email Randi at rswedenberg@calstatela.edu for all academic needs including proofreading papers or arranging for a tutor.

Law school-bound Senior Andrew Post took the LSAT last September and scored a 172. This score is extremely high (top 1%) and has earned him a somewhat early letter of acceptance to the Law Schools at USC#18 and at Duke#11. In addition his to scores and excellent background led to an invitation from Harvard Law to apply for free to their little law program! The Program Director has already begin the Trojan initiation exercises for Andrew though he still has many schools to hear from (and hopefully to choose from as well!) Congratulations Andrew and keep us informed as to your school decisions!
The EEP graduate class list of post EEP grad schools to be attended next will be posted in the next Newsletter but, in the meantime, we hear Geoffrey Yang 07 has already received acceptances to 3 medical schools including Jefferson University, Case Western Reserve University #15*, Drexel University, University of Rochester #17 and Herbert Lee was accepted to UC Santa Cruz for the doctorate in computer science. Michael Kovshilovsky and Claire Kasper have been admitted to several medical schools as well but we have not received the list yet fro m them so we will need to share out in the next Newsletter * #'s rfer to national college ranking
The EEP again scored well in the CSLA Alumni Scholarship competition with six (6) EEPsters awarded a scholarship prize this year. We congratulate EEPsters Alexandra Brady, Jennifer Chemel, Andrew Jick, Samantha Hsu and Joyce Ho, All students were honored at an Alumni Scholarship ceremony in March
In addition to an alumni scholarship Jennifer Chemel has also won the University's Golden Eagle Award of Excellence for outstanding student achievement.
Christopher Humphrey was named the Computer Science Department's Senior of the Year and was honored at a campus ceremony in February.
Rich Maddox was named to the Deans List at USC for the summer 96 term. Only students with perfect GPA’s in doctoral programs receive this distinction so go, great EEP Leader! He also contributed to a recently published book, Early College by Dr. Michelle Muratori, Prufrock Press 2006. www.amazon.com/Early-Entrance-College-Michelle-Muratori/dp/1593631995
Lea Urpa continues to perform for the Los Angeles Children’s Choir
Paisley Kadison was accepted to Law School at Stanford #1
Laura Petersen was accepted to graduate Studies in Psychology at Columbia University # 16
EEP students are actively involved in a large number of the clubs and organizations on the Cal State LA campus. The following clubs and organizations are among the many groups whose officers are primarily EEP students:
Wow now that truly exemplifies the EEPC motto of Scholarship, Involvement and Responsibility with a focus on the Involvement eh?!!
Remember, many of these EEP Alumni and others have provided the EEPsters with their e-mail addresses for consultation and advisement (in the Student Information Binder) with new additions available at Group Meetings quarterly.

NEWS & NOTICES
Greetings EEP Family
I am happy to report that my first quarter back from illness went well, it was definitely a different experience at work these days and unfortunately, some occurrences transpired this term based I think, on my long leave so. As the main disciplinarian of the Program, in my absence the office may have inadvertantly allowed some rules to be bent by our delightful teen scholars who thought they, (the inmates if you would) had been put in charge of our asylum. I quickly wrested control and then set several courses straight and I will continue to right the ship in terms of behavior beginning with this message in highlighting some of the problems in the EEP that have erupted for your review. This discussion will be done in order to illuminate, clarify and solicit parent support to ensure we all can continue to share a positive and comfortable EEP environment.
In the Lounge this quarter I have discovered that there was an increase, to an extreme level, at times, of boisterous, sometimes very inappropriate behavior occurring in the lounge, which includes:
While some of these misbehaviors are more serious than others (i.e. verbally insulting others vs. cleaning the fridge) We must act, immediately to correct and improve all of these problems including any not known or otherwise presently omitted and I look forward to everyone’s assistance to achieve this important goal.
On a positive note I think that, overall the Program and students did and continue to do well; though I do fear, academically –speaking, of the historic EEP Spring dip in school performance so we should be careful to closely attend to the EEPsters syllabi, study habits and use of the Five Points I recently highlighted at Group Meetings and forwarded to all in e-mail form. See below
5 points to school success as per R. Maddox:
Laziness may appear attractive but work gives satisfaction -- Anne Frank (1929-1945)
Every failure teaches a person something if s/he will learn -- Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
CHEERS & JEERS
Cheers to Matt Warren in the Student Affairs VP Office who has been a loyal and dear friend of mine and the Program’s, consequently then he is also a friend of yours! Matt not only drove yours truly to school in the early days of my return this the term but has continued to enthusiastically support the EEP and me at the administrative level of the University at every opportunity
Cheers
Cheers to the to EEP Club (i.e.EEPC) for supporting all EEP students and for being great student leaders. Your hard work and contributions are greatly appreciated for helping to keep the EEP running smoothly and for providing he students support and a well balanced school-student life. e-mail may be sent to: eepclub1@gmail.com.
Cheers to the PEEP for their continued and abashed support, love and care for our EEP!
Jeers
Jeers to the messy EEPsters who don’t clean up after themselves at all. We all need to do our part to keep our Lounge looking nice especially since we risk losing our bid for more space when inspections show disrespect for up our current holdings. In addition since I cannot maintain my usual cleaning and straightening regiment. I must have compliance from the students
Jeers to the irresponsible EEPsters who do not ensure that the EEP doors are completely closed shut when they leave and those who pilfer food from the cubby area and/or the fridge. We had some trouble with strangers coming into the Lounge after hours so we need to be more aware of making sure that the Lounge is secure so if you are the last one out of the common rooms check to ensure the doors are shut and locked and NEVER, EVER PROP OPEN THE LOUNGE DOORS!
Should any parent want to discuss their child’s performance or if there are any questions or concerns please call the office to schedule a meeting. You may also feel free to call or e-mail Rich or Randi. Have a great quarter!
Rich

President's Message
Hi everybody, happy Spring Quarter! I hope you're all enjoying your week of break and will be returning to school well rested and ready for a great quarter.
Winter quarter was a busy one for EEPClub, starting off in 3rd week with our annual Laser tag night at Ultra zone in Alhambra. We then hightailed it over to Long Beach in 9th week for a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific (many thanks to Rich for acting as chaperone). Finally, we were thrilled to see lots of happy dancing EEPsters at our annual EEP Spring Formal last Monday! Thanks to the O'Brien’s for letting us use Firefly Bistro as a venue for this event and for acting as chaperones, to Randi for creating beautiful floral centerpieces, and to Mrs. Nourmohammadi for acting as a chaperone.
As busy as our last quarter was, we're hoping to wrap up the year with several new events as well as a few old ones. Stay tuned for news about our annual Supreme EEP Class (SEC) Show, the EEP Field Day, Basketball Tournament, a possible beach camping trip, and as always, great day trips during the quarter. We're also looking to expand some of the services we offer now, and have been looking for creative ways we can help you as EEP Students (free Blue Books & Scantrons are now distributed by EEPC, and delicious free food is available in the EEP room during finals week), so if you have any suggestions please don’t hesitate to contact us!
As always, the EEP yearbook and DVD will be distributed towards the end of this quarter (8th week group meetings). The trailer for the DVD was unveiled during group meetings, and if that didn't convince you to buy a yearbook, I don’t know what will (but you should buy a yearbook. Now.) Contact Margaret Lee or Frosty O’Brien through either www.eepclub.org or email eepclub1@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Speaking of www.eepclub.org, you should definitely take some time to create an account at EEPC's newly redesigned website. Creating a user account is simple and allows you to access and contribute to various discussions posted up for your benefit. The site is updated constantly with photos, newsletters, and EEPClub news.
Also (as though our quarter wasn't packed enough), EEPC elections will be occurring during group meetings this quarter, and I encourage all of you to run for office if you’re interested. EEPClub is a great experience for all EEPsters, and I would like nothing more than to see lots of new faces (and of course lots of old) participating in the elections this year.
Finally, I'd like to end this by recognizing the many individuals that have made this past quarter so successful. First and foremost, the EEPC board has been outstanding, I really couldn't have asked for a more dedicated, creative, and energetic board. Second, thank you to Rich for his constant advice and presence at our meetings. The EEP Office (Nancy, Amanda, Randi, and Lisa) have been incredibly helpful as well, we couldn’t function without you. Next, thank you to PEEP for your advice and contributions to our various events. And finally, thanks to all EEPsters who give us feedback, attend our events and meetings, read our newsletter, buy our merchandise, and basically keep EEPClub alive. Please, never hesitate to walk in to a meeting or slip a suggestion in our suggestion box. EEPClub exists for your benefit, and we are always open to hearing from you.
