CSLA's Early Entrance Program - Summer 2005 Family Newsletter

Welcome to the Summer 2005! This is the end of our normal school year and a time for EEP Graduates, Provie applicants, a soon to be anointed Elder Class and a time to rejuvenate ourselves in preparation for the Fall Quarter. Spring news and events are plentiful so have fun reading!

EventS

Spring began as many Springs do in Teen-Land with the Big Dance. The second annual EEP Spring Formal was sponsored by the EEPC and orchestrated by EEPC Social Chair Pam Lee and her dance-event assistant Marissa Amy. The bash held on March 19th was indeed a swinging, groovin', hoppin' success. A special thank you to the Cain PEEPsters (Joshua and Leslie) for donating their all-purpose prom space in Eagle Rock. Smart and quite light on their feet, EEP Not-A-Prom participants acted almost high school-ish for an evening!

April 17th was the spring date of the biannual SEAA Talent Search WPCT Testing and PEEP General Meeting. We hosted well over 300 highly gifted young students from approximately 500-targeted schools on this Testing, Outreach, Recruitment and Parent Day. The day began as all WPC Test Days with the PEEP General Meeting from 10:00am to 12:00 followed by the PEEP sponsored refreshment and conversation event for the tester's parents. It was all fantastic and we thank all the PEEP volunteers especially those who brought us so much culinary deliciousness from their treat donations

Very early on April 17th and definitely pre-test time, the PEEP sponsored a Spring Cleaning Event hosted by Helene Chemel who has volunteered to help sell off all old donated items with proceeds to the annual fund for the EEP. Many folks literally emptied their garages into the SUV and delivered to the parking lot behind Fine Arts for Helene to put in cyber-sales-space. She is still interested in this project so drop her a line if you have something to donate to the PEEP helene.chemel@i-soldit.com or call 818-701-0789

April 25th was the annual University Honors Program General Election with a host of EEP candidates running for office. We are pleased to announce the winners in the Accomplishment section and rest assured you will recognize some of the names!

University Honors Convocation was held on Friday April 27th in the old Eagles Nest gymnasium on campus. This traditional University event is a celebration of the best and brightest academic stars on campus, as usual it featured a number of EEPsters. We know that the entire freshman class was honored at this very EEP-like happening and others are likely noted in the Accomplishment section.

The Provie Family Orientation was held on May 19th in the Lecture Hall of King Hall. We want to thank the PEEPsters Chris Greene, Laurie O Brian, Ron Masson and Kathy Miller et al who helped organize the many PEEPSters in attendance including those with other kids applying to the EEP like: the Gees (Steven), Lees (Samantha), Wahl's (Alexandra), Cheng's (Rex), Kong's (Tiffany), Montgomery's (Akai), Ott's-Sharif's (Myle) and the Wu's (Jeffrey, Justin). Wow! We also thank the EEP Alumni Richard Jones, Dimitri Kosturos and Matthew Gozdecki for spending the night talking about their EEP experiences. The 2005 Student Provie Administration Team of Jackie Lechtholz-Zey, Winny Shen (Provies) and Sam Hsu, Herbert Lee (Mentors) and the Mentor Team leaders Laura P., Cat T., Kevork A., Joyce H., Lei Z., Chris H., Clare K., Leslie C., Amanda J., and Justin P. were all in attendance and did a smashing job! The evening heard many questions from many new faces and was a nice opportunity to see how good the EEPsters are in-action for they always steal the show!

May 17th the quarterly Great Lost Auction took place, sponsored by EEPC Lounge Manager Chris Humphrey. This sales event proved to be as fun to watch as a barrel of monkeys, shopping monkeys that is! Many EEPsters participated in this frenzied selling off of discarded items from the EEP Lost and Found. All proceeds as always go to buy frozen pizzas for the Lounge Kitchen.

The first annual EEP Talent Show on Friday May 13th was spectacular and will be held again we promise! Featuring Alegra Lustig and Pam Lee (gymnastics), Marissa Amy (bassoon, singing, cooking), Leslie Cain (piano), Lea Richardson (piano), Andrew Post and Andrew Miller (comedic read/acting), Laura Petersen (painting/art) and Neshan Sarkisian (guitar and singing) who were wonderful, talented, brash, fantastic, skilled and just plain entertaining. The panel of judges including Ron Paula Masson, Rich Simon Maddox and EEPC Officers Herb Lee and Amanda Jancu were tortured with having to decide the winners. You'll be just as frustrated when we tell you to see the Accomplishment section for the winner's names! A special thanks to Amanda Jancu and her St Luke's Episcopal Church in Monrovia whose Pastor donated the venue. More thanks to the Lee PEEPsters (Herb, Pam and Margaret) who loaded and hauled all the evening's supplies to and fro the event including taking away three large bags of trash. Also thanks to the Lustig PEEPsters (Alegra) who stayed over-time to help clean-up. Cheers to you all!

June 8th and 9th were the release dates of the 2004-2005 EEP Yearbook by Yearbook Chairs Catherine Tung and April Eriksson with featured art director and Elder Jackson Vane. A surprise (even to us) Yearbook DVD was also available to everyone who pre-purchased a Yearbook. This Yearbook was the best ever and that's saying something as the others have also been GREAT!

On June 10th EEP Elder Katherine Chuang with the help of fellow 2005 EEP graduate Karen Kuo organized and sponsored the first ever EEP Grad Dinner and Party at BJ's restaurant in Monrovia from 5:00-10:00pm. Well over 25 EEPster grads, alumni and fellow current students joined the gang of grads for a fun night including a visit from the press! Presented at the dinner to each grad were two more creations of Katherine and Karen, the official EEP Graduation Sash and the EEP Graduate Commemorative Plaque. These motivated female grads really impressed us with their passion for celebrating the accomplishments of our graduating students. Thanks also to the PEEP and the EEPC for funding these new EEP graduation traditions!

Friday June 10th also was the date for CSLA's Masters Degree Commencement ceremony on campus featuring a couple of smart people who may be younger than all the others master recipients. You had better check the Accomplishment section for more details!

June 11th was the 58thannual CSLA Commencement exercises at the University with 14 EEPsters having the baccalaureate conferred by the faculty. Among the happy graduates were future engineers, medical doctors, scientists, media relations experts, film producers and lawyers among others. For more info turn to the Accomplishment section NOW!

June 13th the annual San Clemente Camping Trip began when the camper's exited campus in the most traditional looking school bus we have seen since this one rolled off the assembly line in 1979! 35 very happy field-trippers and their Counselors all packed a mountain of food, camp gear and surf boards on the yellow behemoth en route to 3 days of fun in the sun and sand! We are hopeful for a Jaws-less adventure in the pacific!

AnnouncementS

EEPC Elections were finalized after a wild campaign period. We are happy to announce the EEPC Board for 2005-2006 as Andrew Post President, Samantha Hsu Vice President, Pamela Lee Secretary and Josh Cain Treasurer! These young scholars are each very deserving student leaders and we look forward to a very positive year. The Board will determine Chair positions by the Fall quarter, announcements in the next Newsletter. We will be able to say a thank you to all 2004-2005 EEPC Officers and a welcome to the 2005-2006 team at the yearly Transition Luncheon on August 18th

EEP Yearbook 2004-2005 was a HUGE success and looks fabulous! We also had the extra secret surprise of a Yearbook DVD produced entirely by the EEPC Yearbook Chairs April Eriksson and Catherine Tung with outstanding help from Jackson Vane. These creative geniuses kept this video project totally secret from everyone including us! The Chairs have announced that they may be able to order more copies of the Yearbook but you have to act fast. Send a note to them at http://www.eepclub.org ASAP. Yearbooks are only $35.00 and DVDs are only $15, get them BOTH for only $40!

We are fortunate to have several different EEP related web sites so we have decided to note each site and their respective uses. The official EEP Program site http://www.calstatela.edu/academic/eep is temporarily down so we can load updated program info but we hope to have it back up soon. This is a rather bland info site that uses the official University format and is the preferred site for prospective students, parents and educators. We will try to update the data yearly.

The EEPC site is www.eepclub.org and is very student focused. This site has the full text/edition of the Quarterly Newsletter with added photos and many other features and sections not available in the mail-home version of the Newsletter. All EEPC affairs are posted here with all Officer contact e-mail links too. This site is created from an EEPster perspective but also good for oldies.

Speaking of Oldies (aka PEEPsters!) we have the PEEP site at http://www.earlyentrancefoundation.org that is parent focused but also good for smart teens like ours! The PEEP site has some of the Newsletter info and also is the place to access all the news articles about parenting, giftedness and other cool stuff collected by the Program. This site is also used by the Foundation for fundraising events and for contact opportunities for parents to get involved in all things EEP

2005 EEP Class Ring from Jostens RingsÓ have been delivered and may still available to purchase now. These unique EEP 10 carat white or yellow gold class rings will be offered to any 4th or 5th year EEPster and are priced very reasonably at around $425.00. Jostens EEP representative, Eleanor Boudreau at eleanorboudreau@jostens.com is ready for your order now! We have a ring brochure in the offices but please contact Eleanor soon to arrange your order first

PEEP fundraising success in 2004-05! Thank you PEEP for the outstanding contributions to our Lounge and student life! Remember, all Donations to the EEF are tax-deductible. Send donations throughout the year to:

The Early Entrance Foundation
Suite 1298
16311 Ventura Blvd
Encino, CA., 91436
http://www.earlyentrancefoundation.org

The PEEPster's Scrip Program for EEP fundraising is in need of new members. As soon as you sign-up for the program the EEP will automatically receive a small monthly donation from select stores like Ralph's, Vons, Albertson's, etc. After registering there is nothing more to do but shop with no increased cost to you. Heck, the PEEP will even sign up for you! All PEEPsters and EEP Elders should contact Donna Hay at 818-905-6249 dhay16301@sbcglobal.net and or Shelley Kadison at 310-246-9060 or kadisons@aol.com to get the details, it takes about 10 minutes

Students should check their Individual Meeting Schedules carefully and in cases where students must make a change or if PEEPsters would like to schedule a parent meeting with Lisa (EEP Student Counselor) please e-mail her directly: lisie@jps.net or send a note to Erica eepstaff@cslanet.calstatela.edu

Summer Meeting Schedules are sometimes difficult. We may have scheduled new Elders and these 4th year EEPsters do not need to attend mandatory meetings any longer but are always welcome. Students with 0 units are noted as having INCOMPLETE schedules but they may be taking summer off so they do not need to schedule themselves. Also, weeks #8-10 are left open intentionally for all new Advanced Provies to meet with EEP staff. There are no Provies scheduled for either type of meeting but they are allowed to meet with Lisa when available and they may attend normal Group Meetings. In the summer, EEPsters may take classes only two (2) days per week, may come to campus fewer than four (4) days per week and are encouraged to take very few units.

We encourage all EEP students interested in law school admission after the EEP to join the Pre-Law Society. Meeting times may be obtained by contacting EEP recommended faculty advisor Dr. Scott Bowman at: sbowman@calstatela.edu

NEWS & NOTICES

I am still in catch-up mode heading into the busy summer Provie term but I always find time to meet with Parents to discuss EEPsters. To help me get more of this critical student-parent time Erika, Amanda and I can always use help in the office. This help is now especially needed since Cynthia is off this summer to get married. We can never replace the work Cindy E. did for us but while Cindy is recuperating we can always use more PEEPster volunteers. Helene C. has been wonderful coming in to the office this Spring quarter but she could use a partner! If you and your EEPster are willing, we can use PEEP Mom's in the office anytime Mon-Friday school hours or beyond. Just e-mail me rmaddox@calstatela.edu or call the office 323-343-2287.

I also want to encourage all PEEPsters to get involved in EEPC events and activities beyond the usual fundraising. I know that the EEPC Judicial Board needs a parent volunteer to advise and hear cases and it would be great if we also had a lawyer-PEEP spend some time with the JD committee. Perhaps a business-PEEP could spend time with the President and VP in helping them learn effective ways of managing an organization. I know the EEPC Social Chair always needs help with driving to events and event planning so PEEPsters may serve in this manner too. If you are interested please let us know and we will put you to some meaningful-kid-related work J

CHEERS & JEERS

Should any parent want to discuss their child's performance or if there are any questions or concerns please call the office to schedule a meeting. You may also feel free to call or e-mail me. Have a great quarter!
