CSULA's Early Entrance Program -- Summer 2007

-----------EEP Newsletter Est. 1988 ---- Summer 07 73rd Edition -------------
Family Newsletter

It's still spring heading full steam into summer and boy were we busy this quarter! To see who is going to medical school at Yale, who is leaving EEP In July and what major news regarding EEP campus space is brewing better keep on reading! As always, a condensed hard-copy version of this Newsletter will be sent via postal mail ASAP.

Last Quarter's EventS
-----------------

The 28th biannual WPCT testing was Sunday April 15th and it was again a fabulous success. Well over 30 EEPsters, EEP staff and a dozen Parent volunteers welcomed 330 young gifted students and their parents to campus for this traditional Talent Search testing event. We thank the student and parent volunteers who assisted and served our guests. In addition and, as always, prior to the testing event we held the biannual PEEP General Meeting where the Director made his first appearance since his illness to talk with the parents of EEP en masse. EEP Parents rock and we thank them for attending, contributing and serving the tester parents and testers. Plus, we are glad to have our fearless leader back to direct the testing and Parent events!

As we prepared for the WPC exam, we were fortunate to welcome on April 2nd to campus a group of gifted middle school students and their teacher, EEP alum Mr. George Woo, on a Field Trip from Roger Temple Intermediate School from the Garvey Unified School District for a visit to the University campus and the famous EEP. Elders Michael Tecson and Elizabeth Chamberlain took the group on a campus tour and the Director showed the group the EEP lounge and held a Q&A session with them.

Who ever said gifted students aren't very athletic evidently witnessed this year's EEP Basketball Tournament (!!!) held over the course of a school week May 1st -3rd While no one was permanently damaged; this sure ain't the NBA!!! They actually weren't too bad for highly gifted early college entrants! (See Announcements for the winners!)

Gradnite at Disneyland was held on May17th where a merry band of 20 EEP Elders including many of the 2007 college graduates swarmed the Happiest Place on Earth along with 1000's of other same-age high school graduates. Many of our PEEPSters and the Director attended Grad Night back in their day when we hear they arrived in horse and carriage and roller coasters made of logs, were steam powered J so the tradition and normalcy of the EEP continues no matter what Outsiders may think!

Special thanks to EEPC and the PEEPsters who drove and chaperoned that included Grad Nite drivers/chaperones were Mr. Ronald Masson( Ronald), Amanda Jancu's cousin (Nina), and Mr. and Nancy Lustig (Alegra ). Laurie O'Brien (Frosty), Jean Petersen (Laura), and Eric Tung (Catherine)

Who ever said gifted kids don't dance evidently did not attend the EEP version of the high school prom otherwise known as The Anti Prom or the EEP Spring formal. The affair was held on May 19th in the World-class gourmet restaurant Firefly owned by PEEPSters Laurie and Karl O'Brien (Frosty). Thanks for shutting down your restaurant for a night just for us! We appreciate this sacrifice and gift! It was a mere coincidence that the Spring formal dance contest was won by the Team of Frosty O'Brien and his gal Pam Lee who performed a wonderful swing dance to the delight of the crowd.

EEPsters Rock!

Springtime is renewal time and in this vein, it was time to say goodbye and thank you to a great EEP Club (EEPC) administration and congratulations and hello to the new administration. So the EEPC Elections were held on May 23rd (See Announcements for the winners!) pitting the following three(3) candidate tickets against one other for the EEP leadership positions: Frosty O. & Jake P. / Nika N. & Lara R. / Lea U & Alex S. Keep on reading for ‘da winners! As you know from reading previous Newsletters and mass e-mails, Our Student Counselor Lisa and her husband Scott are expecting their first child in August and so we decided to honor her and her still developing baby girl at a Lisa Baby shower event held on May 24th, The EEP Club and office staff planned, organized and funded this happy occasion held in the EEP Kitchen with over 40 EEPsters joining in the celebration. For most it was their first Baby Shower ever, for some of the boys probably their last! The planners fully decorated the room in a sea of pink and other baby-friendly adornments included in the party was much delicious food that included a home made cake from Nancy' s Mom. Wow, good baby times in EEP for all!J

The good (and talented) times continued ala adolescence at the 3rd annual Supreme EEP Class (SEC) Show, This EEPster Talent Show was held at Almansor court in Alhambra on Wednesday evening June 7th. This year the SEC added an Art Show/Contest to the festivities and this year's EEP awards ceremony where the,” Student, Club and Parent of the Year” awards were announced (See News and Notices for winners). The SEC show featured Lea Urpa performing "One Day I'll Fly Away", Constance Jiang performing "Those Who Fight", Matthew Goldin performing "A Song" and his comedy stlings, Nika N was scheduled to perform but was, unfortunately, absent, Tori and Troi Irons singing guitarist duo performing "For A Second", The Duo 2d6 featuring Frosty O'Brien and Alex Lopez Stevens performing "Second to Some" and Maggie Herskowitz performing "The Wizard and I" Lea Urpa soloist, vocals, Constance Jiang soloist, piano Lara Roizen, soloist piano; Mathew Goldin, performance artist, the triple threat comedy styling's of a mystery student who also performed as a soloist-vocals and in a comedy act with Chris Kocurek,. Art contest entries included paintings/ sculptures by Edwin Peng, Jennifer Chen, Laura Petersen, Andrew Post, Sue-Youn Suki Kim, , Shauna Cheung, Matthew Goldin, and Tori Irons.

The EEPC sponsored camping trip to the beach at San Clemente was held June 12-15th and was yet another grand EEPClub success. The EEPsters do enjoy the sun and surf and, contrary to popular belief, gifted teens dig camping and roughing it (relatively speaking of course, as they didn't hunt their own food and they used public restrooms with running water!)

This term the EEP was involved in both the University and our own in-house Chess Tournament; guess it was not a huge surprise that EEPsters won both competitions! Special thanks to EEPC Student Life chair Nika Nourmohammadi who created and organized the EEP Tournament held in a Fine Arts classroom on May 4th. and the ASI Chess tournament that was held in Housing Phase Lounge II on April 27th (See Announcements for winners)

The 3rd annual EEP Elder Grad Dinner for the graduating class of 2007 was organized by graduates Laura Petersen and Elizabeth Chamberlain and was held at BJ's grill in Arcadia on Thursday June 8th from 6-9pm. Nearly all 25 graduates attended along with others present from their admission class who are graduating next year so it was, Wow, a true double-event success as an ad hoc class reunion that naturally and spontaneously occurredat the planned dinner. The Grad Dinner began in 2004 as a way for the year's graduates to have one last EEP event before beginning their lives outside of EEP and their alma mater Cal State L.A. Grads were presented EEP plaques and Commencement sashes by the Director commemorating their achievement of completing the degree as EEPsters, Compliments of the PEEP and the Program. While a tad sentimental it was a rather fun and turned into quite the joyous party, it was a treat to see former young teens as grown up men and women of letters. (See Accomplishments for a list of grads and where they are going next).

The 18th annual Provie Family Orientation, renamed the Pre-Summer Orientation was held on Thursday evening May 30th at the King Hall Lecture Hall from 6-9pm. This is the only time all the Provies and at least one parent are in one room at one time to discuss the Program and the Provie summer processes with the Director, staff, student Mentors, parents and alumni. Organized by the office with help from the Head Mentors Amanda Jancu and Swapneel Patel the event was attended by 60+ Provie hopefuls who asked many questions to the staff, parents and alumni, sometimes asking the same question more than once! We want to thank the following EEP Parents and Alum, who attended to help the Provies and their EEP,

The University Public Affairs Office held the annual EEP Grad photo shoot on Friday May 25th. This is the opportunity to pose and photograph the EEP graduating class on campus by the Golden Eagle monument. Nearly 2/3 of the grads attended, all in cap and gown. It is one of the many culminating events of the year and probably the last time all these former Provies of would be on campus together since their Provie Orientations in 2001 and 2002!!

The 1st annual EEP Field Day was held on a beautifully sunny So Cal after noon in Eagle Rock at the Eagle Rock Recreational park from 11am-4pm on June 11th.The adult counselors present soon realized that a Field Day2007 is a picnic circa 1950-1970 with games and sports, though instead of the 3-legged race they now have a Raman eating tug-of-war and instead of the spoon race it was a hot dog relay. Instead of a slip and slide and hoola hoops they had a Moon Bounce, Thank goodness for water balloons and Frisbees, which made appearances too, J Field day was sponsored by the EEP Class Presidents, Freshmen Eugene Schwartz, Sophomore James Lee and Junior Stephanie Sung and student body president Pam Lee. Special thanks to Stephanie who took the main leadership role in the event planning and who did much of the heavy lifting involved in making this event a huge success! We look forward to more fun in the park in the future, as the EEPsters seemed very pleased and happy out in the sun having fun. It was way cool so thanks Stephanie and the rest for a wonderful idea and a very fun day. Also thanks to all Presidents for their help and work

We were proud of and a little sad to say goodbye to, the graduating class of 2007 at the University's 60th Annual Commencement exercises held on Saturday morning June 9th at Reeder Field, The day stayed cool which was very pleasant to those dressed in long black gowns and mortarboards! (See Accomplishments for the list of grads) Congratulations Graduates!!

NEWS & NOTICES from the Program Director
-----------------

Greetings EEP family

Well, if you haven't opened and read the entire Newsletter sent in e-mail week #1 of the summer term then you have missed a lot

As it was a very busy and active quarter. In my continuing efforts to be brief and succinct, I will address just three main topics this edition of News and Notices. 1.Due to a lack of staffing in an environment packed full of teens (i.e. the lounge) we have discovered we are not able to monitor all students 100% of the time to control for disruptive behavior. So in order to help save equipment and resources from damage/ waste and for the common safety of all students we must design and implement some method of behavior control, hopefully through self-policing so the students may be able, in the long term, to create a new culture of responsible, civil behavior. In essence, we believe it is best to have the EEPsters police themselves in regard to lounge behavior in order to control for some of the following poor behaviors:

Wasting resources, Misusing equipment, Horseplay, roughhousing indoors, Cursing and other inappropriate language, Improper cleaning activities including eating, preparing meals/food or drink and property storage, Risking the security of property and lounge, and Other Inappropriate language involving race, gender or sexuality

A new Program policy involving some type of EEP Citation or ticket system employing various EEPsters as behavioral control specialists backed by disciplinary actions enforced through the EEP office, parents and JD Board was proposed/discussed at group meetings but no consensus was reached. In addition, other ideas to control disruptive teen behavior were:

Cameras installed in every room, Parent volunteers used to monitor all rooms all through the school days, and Parent fundraiser money used to hire a full time student assistant whose primary function would be lounge supervision

I would like to hear from parents, students and alum with your ideas to keep the students safe and the program property free from abuse. Please send me your thoughts/ ideas ASAP to: rmaddox@calstate.la.edu I will continue to discuss with the students and the new EEPC administration as well. The goal is to have students' respect and value EEP resources, equipment and each other. In essence, we want them to be responsible and thoughtful. Not too much to ask we don't think! I would prefer them to police themselves but that rather laissez-faire plan does not seem to be working as well as we would like, as you will see in the upcoming jeers and cheers section

2. As noted in multiple previous Newsletters the campus has now followed the EEP in making e-mail the primary means of communication. Unfortunately even though we send e-mails to students and parents quarterly and we have asked for updated e-mail addresses from all parents and students for over a year we still find approximately 2/3 of all sent mail bounced back to us. We have included a separate flyer in this Newsletter as a reminder to please provide us a valid, working e-mail address. We promise no Spam, no ads and certainly we will never sell your address or disclose it to outside sources.

3. In approx. the next 12 months the EEP offices/ student space will be moving from Fine Arts. Final destination still TBA. I was informed in February that because the University Art department was planning to increase their MFA program that they would need to reclaim their space in Fine Arts that we have occupied since 2000 so we will be moving somewhere on campus. I will share more info that I may discover, with the students at Group Meetings and/or in mass e-mail notices to all. It is our hope that our new campus home will provide us adequate and appropriate space for now and the future. We will be expanding our fundraising efforts this fall in anticipation for the needs of larger space.

President's Message

Hi everybody

I'm sitting at home writing my 3rd and last President's message for the EEP Newsletter, sunburnt, happy, and exhausted from a solid week of EEPC events. I've got some really great people to thank for making sure that our “hey it's the end of the year let's spend a lot of money and have a lot of events” blowout went well, but first I'll recap what we've been doing for the last quarter-

EEP Basketball & Chess tournaments were held in the middle of the quarter, winners are in the Newsletter announcements section. The EEP Yearbook was unveiled during 8th week, courtesy of Yearbook Chair Margaret Lee, and was of course accompanied by the EEP DVD. Next, a gaggle of EEP elders and their guests descended on Disneyland Grad night for the 2nd year running, resulting in some very tired EEPsters the next day. EEPC then organized a surprise baby shower for our wonderful counselor Lisa Sakamoto, held in the EEP kitchen. The annual SEC Show was held just this past Thursday at Almansor Court and again, winners are discussed in other parts of this Newsletter. The first EEP Field Day was held the Monday after the SEC Show at Eagle Rock Park , congrats to the Yellow Team (Herbert L., Kostya K., Jennifer C., Frosty O., and Jake P.) for their victory over Teams Red, Blue, and White. Gigantic quantities of both food and fun were enjoyed by all in attendance, and the event was a great lead into EEPC's San Clemente trip that occurred the next day. The fun of camping (Do eggs stay fresh when not refrigerated? How do you know when a hamburger is finished? Where is Post's ice cream???) coupled with beach activities was a perfect way to round out the year.

There are so many people to thank for helping with these events, plus a few others just for helping out this year, so I'm just going to write a list of people instead of going into pages of appreciation (which, I can assure you, all of these people deserve)-

PEEP

Christian & Christina Puiu-for chaperoning San Clemente without complaint, including feeding the droves of hungry EEPsters that congregated around their campsite
Ned Fenton-for donating Gladys, our beloved soda machine, as well as advising us constantly throughout the year
Donna Hay-for advice and advertising EEPC services to the PEEP
Laurie & Carl O'Brien-for letting us use their restaurant for the formal as well as aiding in organization and preparation
Ronald Masson-for advice and for constantly offering to chaperone our events

Staff

Randi Swedenburg-for chaperoning and attending our events, helping out at our meetings, and just getting involved whenever possible
Rich Maddox-for everything
Nancy Aguilar, Amanda Jancu, and Lisa Sakamoto-for advice & for helping us when we need it

EEPC Board

I already went into specifics about how much I appreciate each of my officers during my speech at the SEC show, so I'm just going to mention each of the officers plus a few others that helped out this year (if you really desperately need to know why you are being thanked then you can email me). So, galaxies of thanks to each of the following people for their contributions:

Natasha S. (VP), Elizabeth C. (Secretary), Swapneel P. (Treasurer), Laura P. (Social Chair), Margaret L. (Yearbook Chair), Frosty O'Brien (PR Chair), Sam Hsu (Academic Chair), Nika N. (Student Life Assistant), Stephanie S., James L., and Eugene S. (Class Presidents), and Herbert L. & Andrew P. (Elder Reps and Advisors to the President, whether she wanted their advice or not).

Also, I'd like to congratulate next year's administration and wish them the best of luck. I've had a great time working as an officer over the past years, and I hope your guys' EEPC experience is as positive as mine has been.

To my fellow graduates – congratulations and good luck in the future! I know it's hard to believe our time at EEP is ending, but I hope you all keep in touch as much as possible. Actually, that goes for everyone in EEP, I hope to hear from all of you in the next few years (read: please talk to me L ). I love and already miss all of you (except you Post) and I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your president over the past year.

One final thank you, and take care, Pam

Pam Lee
EEPC 06-07 President
