Last Quarter's EventS
-----------------

The General Education Honors Program and The General Education Honors Club hosted a preview dinner on Thursday, October 4th, 2007 in the Golden Eagle Ballroom. There was a large turnout of EEP Freshman, who are new additions to the GE Honors Program and are encouraged to participate in the GE Honors Club’s activities and events. This is just the first of many similar banquet events EEPsters will experience as they traverse collegiate academia/life. Good socializing practice with other Honors students and a chance to hob-knob with faculty were had a plenty.

The PEEP Fall Welcome was held at the Firefly Bistro in South Pasadena on October 7th, 2007. This lovely adult mixer allowed returning PEEPsters to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, mix and mingle, while welcoming the new members of our PEEP family. The PEEP welcoming the Dean of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Alfredo Gonzalez and the EEP Director who discussed many topics including our upcoming campus lounge move and the ideal five-year plan for EEP students. We hope that the relationships kindled at this event will lead to years of support and companionship among EEP parents.

The following week the EEP Director kept speaking (!) at a parent meeting at the Mirman School on October 10th. The Mirman School is a very exclusive private school for highly gifted students grades K-8 The event was held to introduce Mirman parents to a variety of secondary school choices for their students including EEP, which has been a somewhat popular choice in the past.

A large number of EEP boys and girls volunteered at the university’s Sally Ride Festival on Saturday, October 13, 2007. The festival was a day full of fun filled activities and workshops to introduce young middle school aged girls to the sciences. Sponsored by the College of NSS, EEPsters volunteered their time to represent EEP and NSS by manning an EEP booth and helping out in any other areas of the fair. Go EEP volunteerism!

EEPC held their annual EEP Fright Night on Friday October 26th, 2007. Students gathered in the EEP Lounge and then took the Metro Goldline train from Union Station to the Old Town Haunt, a haunted house in Old Town Pasadena. They returned to the EEP Lounge for a complete night of scary movies, treats and all-around fun. Thank you to PEEP chaperones Donna Hay (David N), and Mrs. Saiyasombat (Ben S) and her niece and EEP office staff Amanda and Monica who helped make this event possible. J

EEPC hosted a Thanksgiving Potluck in the EEP Kitchen on Wednesday November 21, 2007. Many hungry EEPsters were able to enjoy an array of savory foods such as turkey and cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and pie.

WPCT and PEEP General Meeting held on Sunday December 2nd, 2007. Special thanks to all PEEPsters who volunteered to set-up the reception/lecture hall. Thanks to all our student and parent volunteers who attended the event, we had another successful testing thanks to you! :) More on the future of the Testing in the News Notices section.

The second annual EEPC Holiday Party took place on Friday, December 7th, 2007 at Paseo Colorado in Pasadena and the Pasadena Ice Rink. EEPsters met at Paseo Colorado to participate in a hide and seek competition. The winners: Lubabah B-G, Tori I, Theresa C, Lea R, Amanda M, Matthew G, Natasha S, and Cristina D were presented with a gift basket full of sweet treats and Starbucks gift cards. The party ended at the Pasadena Ice Rink for two full hours of unlimited ice-skating.

December 11th through the 13th was the annual EEPC Big Bear Cabin trip.32 trippers, 6 Elder chaperones and two parent chaperones enjoyed a few days in the mountains enjoying the weather, camaraderie and guarded independence. To best encapsulate the event a quote from Student Body EEPC President, "Big Bear was a lot of fun. Relaxing, skiing and inner tubing abounded. Also represented were Dungeons and Dragons, Guitar Hero, Assassin's Creed, Karaoke, and Mafia. Much food was consumed, and EEPster X dressed up like a woman. All in all, a fun and exciting trip." - Frosty

The EEP once again hosted a Donation box placed in the Lounge for the 38th annual Educational Participation in Community (EPIC) Office Christmas Food and Toy Drive. As usual, our box was overflowing with toys from our generous EEPsters/PEEPsters! EEPsters are so generous that the folks from EPIC needed to retrieve a dolly to carry the Holiday donations back to their office. Go EEP Altruism!

-----------------
AnnouncementS
-----------------

The Early Entrance Foundation (EEF) has purchased for EEPster use a series of instructional math videos, and the Program has added a video from the History channel on The Universe to our existing collection of science videos. Videos may be borrowed for student viewing in the lounge most anytime if you would like to review the latest additions of math videos from the Teaching Company, you may visit the PEEP website.

Also for more recreational uses the EEPC has quite a large collection of more mainstream videos donated from show business PEEPsters (Academy members gets lots of stuff for review and we get the overflow) students may review a catalog of available titles in the lounge, living room. A reminder, if your EEPster has any movie viewing restrictions please discuss responsible viewing with them and feel free to alert the office so we may keep a watchful eye too.

We thank Connie Wax for her care and attention for the EEPsters in substituting for Lisa this fall and we are happy to announce she may return to lead a parent support group this year. The PEEP Board is currently reviewing her proposal

If you are interested in joining the EEF Board and/or in assuming the EEF web page duties please contact Donna Hay ASAP DHay16301@sbcglobal.net. Donna is currently responsible for much wonderful work involving the web page and the Board for which we will forever be grateful. Bravo Donna!

Winter 08 EEPC meetings will be Wednesdays 11:00am-12:30 pm Executive Board meets 10:30-11am same days

Provie interviews begin in January so we will return to the hectic days leading up to the Provie Summer 2008! Seems like yesterday huh!? Forgive our time constraints as interviews continue through Spring.

We continue to work on internship opportunities for all EEPsters especially those in B&E. See several related e-mails were sent this fall. Most MBA grad school programs require applicants to have at least a year of work experience so internships can be essential for future placement. Also, projects and other individual work related to specific areas of business can be very nice in building a portfolio of accomplishments. Students should take the initiative in discovering projects where they may apply their knowledge and passion for entrepreneurship/ business and/or industry. For instance, the EEPC could use help marketing their merchandise for fundraising and ASI and the University Times may use volunteers in their business office(s)

We are happy to announce a new relationship with the campus newspaper the University Times (UT) with writing, intern and employment opportunities available to EEPsters. Indeed the UT will soon launch Cool State an on-line version of the paper. We were told by those in charge of the UT efforts that EEP is now a magic word for access! Good news!

The EEPC is preparing to launch a fundraising campaign to create an EEPC Scholarship fund, they have discovered an organization that will help them raise money through collecting and recycling used consumer electronics (see below list): Be on the lookout for future info on this EEPC project and consider which of the following are taking up space in your homes:
                    ·  Cell Phones
                    ·  Ink Jet Printer
                    ·  Cartridges
                    ·  DVD Movies &
                    ·  Videogames
                    ·  Portable DVD Players
                    ·  Laptop Computers
                    ·  MP3 Players
                    ·  X-Boxes, Sony Play stations, Wii
                    ·  Digital Cameras &
                    ·  Digital Video Cameras (DVRs)
                    ·  Digital Picture Frames
                    ·  Portable Navigation & GPS Devices (Garmin, Magellan, Tom-Tom)

StudenT NewS & AccomplishmentS
-----------------

We know they did stuff but without EEPsters reporting accomplishments to us, we are left wondering and trying to remember things we may have heard. That said, we recall only that:

Our apologies for the thinnest Accomplishment section ofopr quite a long time we evidently did not do a strong enough job soliciting accomplishment news! We know they must have done more stuff we just were not notified.

Please please report wonderful accomplishments to us for inclusion in the next Newsletter preferably in e-mail form (eepstaff@cslanet.calstatela.edu) with pertinent details included.

Thank you!

News, Notices, Cheers and Jeers
-----------------

Yikes this was a freaky fall! Lots of stuff happening (good and bad) even through the 2nd week of December. As always, I will communicate the News and Notices from the Office in easy to swallow bullet form.

Here we go and really in no particular order

-- The EEP move to a new location is still in the works, we have submitted a proposal for space in King Hall (the original EEP home by the way). It will take a community effort to move so be on the lookout for more news and info sent through e-mail and at group meetings. This will be a huge EEP change process so patience and help will be requested/required. Thanks now and later!

-- The EEP is being included in the university’s planned Honors College of the future. Exciting new developments in the works. More at our next WPCT meeting

-- One PEEP suggestion to help solve the overall funding issues of the EEP is an EEP student annual fee. This fee idea is at the discussion stage only so feel free to share your opinions.

-- Another recent suggestion from our last PEEP meeting was an EEF fundraising sub-committee to be tasked with pursuing different avenues of funding including alum. More news as it develops, check e-mail from us and EEF/PEEP

-- Speaking of e-mails we inadvertently omitted the entire new freshman PEEPSter cohort from the general PEEP e-mail group this fall, I apologize for this error and thanks to PEEPster Deborah G. for her help in alerting us. While the new PEEPsters still received e-mails sent directly to their PEEP cohort (i.e. entitled Advanced PEEP07) they unfortunately did not receive info e-mailed just to PEEP. This failure on our part led to some confusion and possible poor feelings that were expressed at our general PEEP meeting at the biannual WPC testing event in December. I assure you, the omission of e-mail addresses and resulting communication failure was a reflection only of an extraordinarily busy office manned by minimal support staff tasked with helping lots of busy/active teenagers and parents. We have corrected the error so ALL PEEPsters get ALL e-mails and we apologize for the lack of communication. The PEEP Board has posted several of the mass PEEP e-mails on line for your review e-mails are here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EarlyEntranceFoundation

-- Not to beat a subject to death but I again urge everyone to check their e-mails to ensure we have your correct address (we send at least one mass e-mail to everyone in EEP per quarter) also please check with your spouse as we have space for only one parent e-mail address per student and it may not be you. I worry as we still get lots of bounce backs from PEEP and EEPsters groups. E-mail management is difficult so we are looking for a PEEPster volunteer to help in this continuing project. E-mail is the primary mode of communication for both the university and the Program. We never release your e-mail address and typically send only items deemed appropriate and useful.

-- Also, a note on extracurricular events discussed at the PEEP meeting in December. EEP events are organized and sponsored by the volunteer student leaders of the EEP Club and they do a pretty darn good job. Events are discussed and planned during EEPC meetings that are open to all students (time/day TBA quarterly) then events/activities are discussed during EEP Group Meetings, Event info Flyers are posted in the lounge and e-mails sent regarding event deadlines and details. Permission Slips should be posted on the EEP Club website and are distributed at group meetings or left in the lounge in envelopes posted on the wall; completed slips are submitted to the EEP office for convenience. Event info is anything but secret and if any PEEPster is curious about events they may contact the office, any EEPC Officer, preferably the Social Chair or assistants + me or perhaps the best/easiest source of event info would be your own student. Events are usually held on slow or non-school days Friday through Sunday or during the break week(s) as this is the time period that best fits most student/parent needs. Indeed, PEEP help in event planning is welcome just contact us. :) Event participation like Tutoring is encouraged not mandatory.

-- A word on Tutoring. EEPC also manages a Peer Tutor service. Peer Tutors are not trained teachers they are fellow EEPsters who successfully completed courses those students seeking help are taking currently. Students needing assistance must be self aware of their performance, complete a self analysis of knowledge, communicate the problem with others to include parents, EEP staff and faculty and above all, they should be responsible for their own progress and meeting their own learning objectives.

-- The last item also hails from the PEEP December meeting where a Parent welcoming committee was suggested as an addendum to the PEEP presence at the EEP Small Group Meetings that are held each August and the Fall welcome that is held in October for new parents and students. We love new ideas to improve the Program so thanks to the parents again! Let me start the process. I think 3-5 parents would be ideal for this committee, task #1 would be to define their roles, objectives and the methodology planned to achieve these objectives (i.e. this task is less complex than it sounds by the way). Volunteers send me a brief note and we’ll start the practice.

-----------------
CHEERS & JEERS
-----------------

Cheers to everyone who volunteered their time to make the December 2007 WPCT a success. Heck, I say Cheers to everyone who volunteered anywhere positive this fall :)

Cheers to Connie Wax for volunteering to help substitute for Lisa while on maternity leave. Thank you Connie.

Cheers to Donna Hay for her tireless work on the EEF/PEEP Newsletter and web pages! Hoo Ray!

Cheers to students who Self Regulate have high self–efficacy for school success who get involved in all aspects of school life, who take initiative, who communicate when problems arise, who maintain a Mastery orientation toward learning, who have Clarity in thoughts -words and deeds and who are disciplined and organized learners. Your success is your reward!

Cheers to Roger and Susan Perreault (Spencer), for chaperoning Big Bear 2007! Their completely voluntary decision to spend three days with a busload of EEPsters was greatly appreciated and nothing short of miraculous.

Cheers to Lisa coming back next quarter.

Jeers to the freshmen that were either disruptive or academically irresponsible this quarter and who caused a ton of extra work, stress and headaches for the staff as well as harm to our reputation and other EEPsters.

Jeers to those who signed up to help at the WPC testing and let us down by not showing up. We rely on students being responsible.

Jeers to whoever made the staff on post quarter clean-up duty (Rich, Amanda, Monica, and Jordan) literally gag from the overpowering stench of what Rich proclaimed as the worst rotten food ever found in the cubby area throughout the last 18 years of EEP. A good reason we clean out the cubbies every quarter are the real possibilities of biohazard and while we have discovered many food items left strewn about their cubby space in varying stages of decay this year’s display was the worst and most offensive. A plea for decency.

Jeers to students caught cheating this fall. A high Academic crime and definitely not the EEP way of doing things.

Should any parent want to discuss their child’s performance or if there are any questions or concerns please call the office to schedule a meeting. You may also feel free to call or e-mail Rich or Monica. Have a great quarter!

- Rich
